Bingo! Stay on the Ball Ladies by Belinda Bradley

Bingo! is a clever consideration of friendship - life and dying on one’s own terms, peppered with tales of real life and often very funny.

Six mature women, in rural Tasmania, who played netball together when they were young, in an unfortunate twist of fate, on their way to bingo, they have a car accident and run over “Death”. Death has a bad back and is not impressed.

Playwright’s Note - Belinda Bradley

Bingo! has been a labour of love which I hope in some small way honours the women who raised me.  It’s been gently pushed and encouraged onto the page by generous creative collaborators. I’d like to thank dramaturg Peter Matheson, and the Cowshed who put up with me for quite a while! And Lucinda, whose positivity, insights, and catering skills never fail to astound! Thanks also to the delightful Lisa and Brett, a talented tag team who just got it, and who always stood up for the script. And, of course, the brilliant, hard-working, multi-tasking actors who have breathed life into Bingo! And finally, a special shout out to Franz Docherty, who kindly let me steal a couple of good ideas.

Blue Cow Theatre’s Note - Lucinda Toynbee Wilson

Thank you for supporting this new Tasmanian work written by Belinda Bradley and produced by Blue Cow Theatre.

Blue Cow Theatre is artist-driven, striving to create opportunities for Tasmanian artists to tell contemporary stories, tapping the rich narratives and perspectives of our community. We embrace the work as fundamental, adding enormous social value as part of a vibrant arts sector. We provide rare professional theatre opportunities for performers and aligned creatives.

Belinda Bradley wrote Bingo over several years as part of Blue Cow’s plays and playwright’s development program the Cowshed. The Cowshed is the longest, most comprehensive playwright development program in Tasmania and aims to get Tasmanian plays onto the stage.

The making of this production with this terrific cast and crew has been a particularly meaningful and moving experience. Death is inevitable yet we are generally not very good at talking about it. Needless to say, there were many tears of loss and joy shed as we journeyed this script.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of the production and a special call out to Lisa Gormley (she knows why :).

Looking forward to seeing you at another Blue Cow Theatre production soon.

Director’s Notes- Lisa Gormley

From the first read of BINGO I adored Belindas script. It evoked nostalgia for me, a dash of Monthy Pythons Meaning of life, mixed with some Strictly Ballroom a splash of the Young Ones and Golden Girls all blended with Belindas unique warmth, sharp wit and Tassie heart.

It has been a pleasure to cast and watch these wonderful performers seamlessly slip themselves in these characters shoes. The heart of these characters resides in the chests of these actors. Finding truth, real connection and high stakes care has been the foundations this show is built on. Death is no laughing matter, unless we allow it to be. Then it becomes so much more. A truly human experience filled with all the complexities and joy of our lived lives.

It is rare we get to work with the people we admire. And working so closely with Co director and friend of 20 years Brett has been a careeer highlight. We speak the same language and have the same love of detail and honest connection. Without Brett and his generosity and commitment we would be a number short for BINGO!

I hope you enjoy this production as much as I have. Join me in admiration for the creative genius of Set Designer Jill, Master of light Jason, Musical magician Saxon and all round bloody good egg producer plus much much more Lucinda.

Live long and prosper. Lisa Gormley

Director’s Note - Brett Rogers

"BINGO!" is more than just a play; it's a journey through life, death, and all the messy, beautiful stuff in between. In this thought-provoking story, six women find themselves in a place that's not quite life, not quite afterlife. As they twirl with Death in a captivating dance, they discover the extraordinary power of friendship, honesty, letting go of silly grudges, and embracing fate and destiny.

I jumped onto the "BINGO!" bus a little later into the ride, after Belinda, Lisa, and Lucinda had already laid down the groundwork for the heart and soul of the play. Teaming up with my talented friend Lisa to co-direct this amazing journey has been an absolute blast, and I'm crossing my fingers that it's the first of many more creative adventures together!

During our rehearsals, we've shared lots of laughs and a few tears. Working with this remarkable group of Tasmanian artists has been such an honour and one heck of a life highlight. It's been a loud and clear reminder that life is meant to be lived with all you've got! Our cast and crew have put their hearts and souls into bringing this touching story to the stage. I hope the journey of these six friends touches your heart, and that you leave the theatre today with a fresh appreciation for friendship, love and all those special moments we share while we're on this wild ride called life!

DESIGN TEAM

Lighting and Projection Design - Jason James (The Maids, Amy’s Tattoo),

I like breaking things apart to see how they work.  However, I haven’t been able to break light apart to see how it works, so I am endlessly fascinated by it.  I have tried splitting it, hitting things with it, stopping it, warming it, cooling it, and bending it. Yet, I still haven’t managed to break it. Light is still useful to create awe, direct where people look and add emotional impact to scenes. I guess some things are useful even if I can’t break them.

Set Design - Jill Munro (Rocky Horror Show, The Mares) Jill brings her designs to life from her country-based design studio, approaching her design process in an open collaborative way. She begins by gaining a clear idea of the director’s vision, and aesthetic. She then ‘dreams big’, collating images and inspiration from far and wide. Texture, detail, form, and function define Jill’s design theory, with architectural form and the natural world her two biggest sources of inspiration. She is also inspired by how humans interact with the space around them. She believes that it’s the thoughtful consideration of detail that can raise a design from good to exceptional.

Sound Design & Composition Saxon Hornett Devers (TSO, Blundstone),

What I love most about musical and sound design is its ability to evoke specific emotions and breathe life into the unfolding drama on stage. Crafting each note and sound allows me to transport audiences to distant worlds, trigger nostalgia, and ignite raw emotions within them. When done thoughtfully the practice elevates the entire theatrical experience becoming more then underscore for actors on a stage. This blend of artistry and creativity fuels my enjoyment for the craft, and with every new project, I find further nuance and challenges in bringing stories to life through the power of sound.

Choreography - Claire Dawson (Big Monkey, Blitz) Claire Dawson is an English born performer, hailing from Liverpool, who attended the prestigious Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in the UK. Her roots lie in devising theatre for the community, musical theatre and pantomime, with which she worked around the UK.

That was all well and good, but Claire wanted more, she wanted a Big Sky and Big Green. A Tassie boy appeared and offered her adventure across the seas; she arrived in Hobart in 1996 and has not left since….well not completely.

Claire has managed to travel the world with her art, performing her one woman musical comedy show A Woman on the Edge at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and then at the Adelaide Fringe Festival where it gained 5 stars and rave reviews.

Loving a bit of creativity Claire has written, produced and performed 6 one-woman shows and written and produced 3 original CDs of her songs. Her musical career saw her co-write an Electro-Pop album with her former band: WonderMouse which premiered in Sydney, and a festival favourite with her Tasmanian based band: SiSi and the Sonics, when Claire performed under the guise of SiSi.

Claire has enjoyed working in the Tasmanian Arts and Theatre scene, performing and choreographing with professional theatre companies; Blue Cow Theatre Co, Tasmania Theatre Co and Big Monkey Theatre Co, with whom she is also the annual choreographer and on the Board. She has worked extensively as MC both in the corporate world and at the Festival of Voices, where she has also been a regular performer over the last 10 years.

Outside of the world of the Arts, Claire teaches singing, dancing, yoga and meditation and can be found pottering with her hubby and very small dog down in Snug.
