Ruben Guthrie (2012)

By Brendan Cowell

22 – 31 March 2012
Theatre Royal Backspace

Ruben Guthrie is the fabulously sophisticated comedy from Australian actor and playwright Brendan Cowell. He lines up the shots for us in a heady cocktail of fizzy humour and touching revelation. It’s a sparkling play about spiralling high, crashing hard and going to AA with your mum.

WHAT PEOPLE SAID ABOUT “RUBEN GUTHRIE”

“A significant achievement. The strength of the acting alone makes this a convincing choice for Blue Cow.” – The Mercury

“Director Robert Jarman’s bold and often confronting production. … Scott Farrow is relentlessly wired and energetic for almost all of the more than two hour show on a shiny-surfaced stage with only two light-box cubes as set.” – Stage Whispers

“This is a vibrant and lively piece of theatre, leaving its audience emotionally drained but with plenty to think about. There's a fantastic scene where Ruben (Scott Farrow) and his friend Damian (Andrew Casey) relapse into a bender of Roman Empire proportions, rolling around on the floor surrounded by the detritus of their iniquity, in a complete abandonment of reason.” – Australian Stage
